Mary P. Hutzel

June 4, 1922 — July 29, 2024

Mary Patricia Hutzel, (Nee McNally), known to her friends as "Pat", born June 4,1922, in St. Paul, Minnesota died peacefully at her home in Batavia, Ohio on July 29, 2024. In the days leading up to and at the time of her death, she was surrounded by loving family members. For the last eight years of her life, she was lovingly cared for by her daughter, Katie Hank.

She was preceded in death by her parents Catherine and The Honorable Judge Carlton F. McNally, her four siblings, her loving husband of 43 years, Bernard L. Hutzel, her daughter, The Honorable Judge Rachel A. Hutzel, her son-in-law Paul Hank, three grandchildren and many very dear friends.

She is survived by 12 children, Bernard (Sue) Hutzel, Peter (Rita) Hutzel, Patrick (Marcy) Hutzel, Ida Hutzel, Katie (the late Paul) Hank, Paul (Adrienne) Hutzel, Marty (Julie) Hutzel, Martha (Bill Hayes) Hutzel, Carl (Sharon) Hutzel, Margaret (Dave Borowski) Hutzel, Matt (Annie) Hutzel, Alice Hutzel, 25 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pat was a truly remarkable woman. She attended The Visitation School, completed three years at St. Catherine's College in St. Paul, Minnesota and was a devout and lifelong Catholic. In 1943 she left St. Catherine's to attend Grailville, a Catholic Missionary School and farm in Loveland, Ohio. It was there that she met and fell in love with her future husband, Bernard, who proposed in the Grailville farm milkhouse where he served as the resident farmer. Theirs was a marriage of love and respect, together raising children on a dairy farm in Loveland, Ohio not far from Grailville.

Pat loved music and sang in the St. Francis Choir for several years. She was known to add a few verses when singing "Happy Birthday", often guiding others in the sing-along with her hands. She and her husband often attended the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Her children have many fond memories of her singing in the farmhouse, in the car, and elsewhere. Once when she was in pre-op for carpal tunnel surgery, she began singing, Oh Danny boy! And the anesthesiologist joined in enthusiastically.

She fully embraced her Irish heritage. Celebrating St. Patrick's Day was a must. She never missed an opportunity to share her spirit, positivity and loving nature with others. Both sets of grandparents came to the US from Ireland, and Pat poured her beautiful Irish heart and joyful presence into every celebration and every person along her journey. She had the pleasure of traveling to Ireland three times, as well as Wales, England, Majorca, Canada, and Holland.

Pat cared deeply about and knew a lot about mothering and raising children. In her sixties and seventies, she volunteered at various organizations serving at-risk mothers and families. She adored young children and just a week before she passed, she asked to see some of her great grandchildren who were visiting the area.
