Kathy Turner, aged 80, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2025 surrounded by her children. Born Kathleen Janet Haney to the late Worner "Jim" and Lucie (nee Patterson) Haney on October 7, 1944, she was a lifelong resident of Batavia, Ohio. Kathy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Derl Turner, as well as her parents, sister and brother-in-law Susan and Charlie Wiederhold, and her brother, Mike Haney. Kathy is survived by her children Matt, Jeff (Kelly) Turner, and Kelly (Joe) Taulbee, and her much-adored grandchildren, Mackenzie (Derek) Clinger and Max Turner; Jonah, Sam, and Abe Turner; and Ben, Graham, and Lucie Taulbee. She is also survived by her sister, Cindy Haney, and her sister-in-law Suk Jung Haney. She will be dearly missed by many nieces and nephews, extended family members, and her cat, Buddy.
Kathy was a graduate of Batavia High School, Class of 1962. She began working for Cincinnati Bell Telephone Company as an telephone operator while she was in high school and was even featured in a city-wide "Voice with a Smile" advertisement campaign. She left the telephone company in 1970 when she married Derl on April 25th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church where she was a member.
Kathy and Derl continued to raise their family in Batavia where she volunteered and supported her community in many ways. There was nothing more important to Kathy than her family and the community in which she raised them. Kathy was an active volunteer at Batavia Elementary School, and participated in band as well as athletic boosters, the PTO, and the after-prom committee. Later, she was a substitute cafeteria worker for the schools, and enjoyed spending time with the Homemakers' Club. Kathy was a well-known and regular patron of the Batavia branch of the Clermont County library. To her grandchildren, the library often felt like an extension of her house and was a place they enjoyed visiting with her. Kathy loved traveling with her family, whether it was camping in their various VWs or renting a big family cabin in Hocking Hills. To her, there was nothing better than being all together.
In 1993, Kathy was elected to the Batavia Village Council and served until her retirement in February 2025. During her tenure, Kathy was Vice Mayor for several years and served as a village trustee for the Batavia Union Cemetery. She championed the Batavia Farmers' Market and could be found there most Saturdays during the season. Additionally, Kathy helped reorganize and grow the yearly Christmas in the Village event, providing a fun, free, child-centered Christmas celebration for families of the Batavia community. Kathy loved the Village of Batavia, her time on council, and the relationships she built within the community.
Visitation will take place on March 26, 2025 from 4 to 8 PM at Moore Family Funeral Homes 225 Spring St. Batavia. Private inurnment will be at Batavia Union Cemetery.
