Jean was born in Corbin KY as the 4th child to William (Willie) Combs and Ethel Combs (Sergent). Her parents had 3 more children after her. Jean’s family moved to a 4th floor apt. on Race St. in Cincinnati when she was 7 years old. She enjoyed her life there. They walked to many destinations, but also used the street cars all over the city to such places as Price Hill, Cheviot, The Cincinnati Zoo, Mt. Airy Park, Eden Park, and Finley Market for only a dime plus 2 cents for a transfer. Jean attended Rothenberg Jr. High and Woodward High School. Her dad worked at the Union Terminal and it was exciting to watch the trains being loaded and taking off, especially during the war years.
Some of the Landmarks Jean remembered were Walts, Big Sixty, Bailey, Big Momma, and Camp Washington. Good places to work included Baldwin Piano, Globe Wernke, Trailmobile, KDI, Gruen Watch, RCA, and Fisher Body. As a young person, Jean loved her work at Hutzler’s China Store at Finley Market on Elder St. She remembered the friendly people and some of the many businesses in the area including Lindner Ice cream, Links Dime Store, Bill’s Bakery (hot glazed donuts were the best), and Iacobucci’s Store . Other memories included Emmanuel community Center that did so much for the kids. She remembers having fun with access to many places of entertainment, including many theaters (Royal, Times, Capitol, Taft and more ), and some of the Big Bands that played at Washington Park’s great bandstand, including Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. Washington Park offered a lot with swimming pools, volleyball or square dancing at night, and horseshoe pitching. Bonfires and Wiennie Roasts were offered at Sharonville Woods along with square dancing. Other memories include Crosley Field, Mt. Adams Incline, Khron Observatory, Taft Auditorium, and Music Hall.
Jean married Roy B. Muse in 1951. They lived in Norwood while she worked at Baldwin Piano and Roy worked at Grennan’s Bakery(Tasty Bread). Their only child, Rick, was born in 1955. They moved to their newly built house in Mt. Carmel in October of 1960. There, they enjoyed many family gatherings, especially on 4th of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. Volleyball, Wiffleball, crouquet, and other games were a delight to the many children and adults in the large backyard.
Rick married Rosemary Petry (Pattie Combs Dennler, Jean’s niece, introduced them to each other) in 1980 and then a few years later, the delights of grandparenting began for Roy and Jean. They invested so much time and effort into building relationships with each of their 3 grandchildren (David, Nathan, and Julie) as they grew up in Chattanooga, TN and later moved to Wisconsin. Jean and Roy would travel back and forth and many vacations were enjoyed together, including visits to Disney World, Sea World, Callaway Gardens, and Dolleywood. For many summers , 2-3 of the grandchildren would come to Cincinnati and stay for a week or two at a time. Special memories included the wonderful Vacation Bible Schools at Eastgate Baptist Church, as well as going swimming and playing with friends that Roy and Jean had introduced their grandchildren to. Roy and Jean attended many special events in Tennessee and Wisconsin, including concerts and graduations.
Roy and Jean enjoyed many years of serving in church, including heading up a puppet ministry, making meals for others as needed and helping with vacation Bible School. They loved to go to Southern Gospel Concerts, especially Gold City, Ivan Parker, and Brian Free.
Roy passed away in October of 2007. Jean continued to be involved with others, many of whom were a great help to her in her last several years of life. She loved to cook for and give gifts to others.
Jean had accepted Christ as her Saviour and she would spend a lot of time praying for others . She passed from this life into heaven on May 9, 2014 with Rick and Rosemary at her bedside. She had many visitors while she was in the hospital and in hospice and was able to acknowledge them right up to her hour of passing.
