Earl Alton Pomeroy

Earle Alton Pomeroy Jr. passed away Sunday, May 3, 2020 at his home in Batavia, Ohio at the age of 85. He was born on January 7, 1935 in Dexter, Maine, the only son of Earle Alton Pomeroy and Marion Hope Tucker. Earle Jr. served in the National Guard for 3 years. He enlisted on April 05, 1955 for active service in the U.S. Marine Corps. He began his training at Parris Island, South Carolina. He married Barbara Joyce Small of Pittsfield, Maine, December 29, 1956. He was promoted to sergeant within four years. Sergeant Pomeroy had duty stations in Okinawa, Japan, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and from April 17, 1967 to May 6, 1968 he served in the Vietnam War. During his military service he continued studying Guerilla units, Military functions, Civil Disturbances and disasters, and many other subjects that intrigued him. He finished his military career as a recruiter in the southern counties of Ohio. He received an honorable discharge on April 4, 1971 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He focused his sights on a promise given to his mother when she died at his young age of 15 that he would go to college. He enrolled at the University of Cincinnati in 1974, and graduated with a degree in their Criminal Justice program in 1978. He became a full time patrol officer on March 15, 1977 for Batavia, Ohio Police Department and was promoted again to Sergeant in 1983 by Chief Jim Seifert. He was welcomed by the citizens of the village as he protected their homes and businesses, always with a smile and the occasional wiggle of his finger if you were bending the rules a bit. He retired on May 3, 1997, but remained a faithful volunteer for many years. He was a loyal husband of 64 years, loving father, and a courageous patriot. His daughter Cindy Lou Pomeroy predeceased him in 2007 at the age of 49. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Joyce (Small) Pomeroy, His twin sons, Gregory Scott Pomeroy, and his wife Ingrid (Lippka) Pomeroy, Martin Dennis Pomeroy and his wife Lori (Everton Garvin) Pomeroy. He leaves behind grandchildren; twins, Anthony Dwayne Lester, Shane Patrick Lester and his wife Jessica (Slater) Lester, Gregory Scott Pomeroy Jr., Marc Jason Pomeroy, Cody Miles Pomeroy, Malinda (Pomeroy) Withnell, Kyle Earle Thomas Pomeroy and his wife Tina Marie (Motte) Pomeroy, Lillie Ann Denaya (Pomeroy) Knapp and her husband Derek William Knapp, Sarah Faie Elizabeth Pomeroy, James Daniel Garvin and wife Elisabeth Anne Garvin, Joel Dain Garvin and his wife Barbara Suzanne Heilmann Garvin. He leaves behind great grandchildren; Emilia Magdalena Garvin, James Devereaux Garvin, Elise Danielle Garvin, Nathaniel “Natalie” Withnell and Alex Withnell. The family will announce a Celebration of Life at a later date when local restrictions are lifted due to the COVID-19 crisis.
