Derl had an older sister, Jackie (Bud) Harbor as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Derl graduated from Batavia High School in 1963 which is where he met his high school sweetheart, Kathy. Derl and Kathy were married on April 25, 1970 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and raised their three children in Batavia.
Derl spent his career working with machine tools at G.A. Gray, Siemens Alice, and Cincinnati Milacron, retiring in 2010. He enjoyed working on many projects, restoring numerous Volkswagens, tinkering with cameras, and whittling. He is especially known for his door mice which are perched in the homes of his friends and family members.
Derl's greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially when it involved telling jokes and funny stories of his life. He enjoyed family road trips, driving his family thousands of miles across the country to see wonders great, small, and many of the "world's largest." Even though he worked hard, he taught his family the value of spending time together on vacation. In recent years, Derl enjoyed a yearly cabin vacation with his immediate family in the Smoky Mountains and Hocking Hills.
