U.S. Air Force Veteran
Bruce A. Chitwood, resident of Union Township, went to be with the lord on October 27, 2022 at the age of 71. Born July 31, 1951 to the late Ronald D. Sr. and Anna M. (nee Buchtmann) Chitwood. Beloved husband of Marian "Lexi" Chitwood (nee Plunkett). Loving father of Danielle S. Chitwood and Joshua A. Chitwood. Cherished Grandfather of Blayden Chitwood and Alexis Chitwood. Brother to the late Ronald Jr. (surviving Vivian) Chitwood, Jerry (Mimi) Chitwood, Tom Chitwood, Jim (the late Ruby) Chitwood, and Dianna (the late Don) Tobler. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Bruce never met a stranger. He grew up in Norwood, graduating as a Norwood Indian in 1969. He would raise Danielle and Josh in Norwood as well, just blocks from his corner store, Bruce's Beer Barrell. He loved going to family reunions, and would be the families travel agent when planning, thus securing large discounts on travel by booking a large group. Coupon-ing was a hobby for Bruce, but only so he could use the money saved on his kids and hobbies. He had a large baseball card collection he was quite proud of and enjoyed going golfing and bowling in his free time.
After he closed his corner store in '83, he went to work for the United States Postal Service, working as a mail handler in the backrooms, mostly getting the large crates unloaded with a forklift. This came naturally to him as he spent time as a Sergeant in the US Air Force in Cargo Logistics. His time in the Air Force was dear to him. He was a proud veteran, and anytime he saw another veteran in public, he would go introduce himself, make sure to shake their hand and thank them for their service. Bruce volunteered with the DAV when he was able. He also helped out with the activities of the National Postal Mail Handlers Union. These gave him many opportunities to meet new friends, share life stories, and make sure everyone around him was loved and taken cared for.
A Mass of the Christian will be conducted for Bruce on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022, at 11am in St. Veronica's Catholic Church, 4473 Mt Carmel Tobasco Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45244. Visitation will take place prior to Mass at 10am. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family at Dayton National Cemetery in Dayton, OH.
